HOW TO SUCCEED
ALTERNATIVE MUSIC
Alternative Rock
Underground Movement
In the early 1980’s, the musical offering from alternative bands such as R.E.M incorporated elements from the punk era with a flavour of folk music and intermingled with mainstream influences. This musical diversity was exemplified by the early 80’s LA movement Paisley Underground, whose bands evoked a 1960’s revival by incorporating a blend of the psychedelic, with folk rock akin to the Byrds, the west coast sound of the Beach Boys, as well as punk and underground influences from such as the Velvet Underground.
By this time, indie-styled record labels were eager to exploit the developing shift from punk rock, which was at the core of the underground scene at that time, to that of alternative rock which was now incorporating a broader blend of musical styles. As this shift developed momentum, a growing number of bands, which original started out with an emphasis on punk rock, steadily diversified, musically, to accommodate this new development.
Bands such as R.E.M set the tone for alternative rock throughout much of the 80’s. By the end of that decade, a number of alternative bands were being signed up by the major record labels at the expense of the independents. In fact, as the movement was slowly shifting away from its more extreme musical roots, the scene was being set for alternatives’ commercial potential to be fully exploited in the early 1990’s, with bands such as Nirvana in the forefront.
